When Does Morning Sickness Start, When Does It End And When Will I Feel Normal Again?

Pregnancy hormones can drive even the most experienced mum crazy. Morning sickness may last days or weeks or the entire length of your baby’s developmental life. Historical pregnancy patterns can answer the inquiries of when morning sickness starts and when it ends, but it is not an exact science.

Most women who have experienced this side effect of pregnancy will agree that it will begin and end at times that are most unpleasant and inconvenient for them. If asked "when does morning sickness start in your day" – many will answer that they wake up to their morning crackers next to their bed. Others will answer that theirs doesn’t let them sleep all night.

Morning sickness is very personal, and people who have not experienced it (especially men) can not often understand its debilitating effect. A woman who is full of hormones and has to add pregnancy and nausea on top of that has to survive for nine months in her own little topsy-turvy world. Looking forward to being normal again may be all that she has to inspire her to move out of the bathroom.

Many studies that evaluate when morning sickness starts and when it ends focus on a more serious type, hyperemesis gravidarum. US studies tended to use women from a higher socio-economic background, or only question women’s perceptions of their sickness towards their last semester. However, a two year study printed in the British Journal of General Practice studied the start and end of morning sickness – and used women from all socio-economic backgrounds.

Medical researchers began questioning women after their first menstrual period was missed, and had mid-wives visit the pregnant women on a regular basis. In this study, 80% of the pregnant women experienced it. When the evaluation was being made, 72% began their feelings of sickness between the 29th day and the 49th day from missing their first menstrual period.

When evaluating when it ends for these women, the study found that 60% were lucky enough to have their morning sickness end by the 84th day after missing their first menstrual period, and over 90% had stopped feeling sick by the 112th day. When morning sickness starts and ends are questions that haven’t undergone much scrutiny in the medical community.

Trends and medical records can demonstrate the likelihood of determining when it should start and end, but trends and statistics don’t account for your unique pregnancy hormones. When the feel of being sick starts and ends can only truly be known when you can answer the question "what does morning sickness feel like." Don’t worry, the monster will finally go away and you’ll be able to get out of bed and start chasing your baby around instead of racing for the nearest toilet. But after baby is born, you’ll still be living in your topsy-turvy world, and you’ll never be "normal" again. Forevermore, you’ll be better than normal.

I did some research and came upon a study done in the 1950′s that touches on this very topic. I’ve published the article at our compounding pharmacy’s website.
